Mr. Pierre R. Lamond, Vice-President & Technical Director
National Semiconductor Inc.
2900 Semiconductor Dr. MS D-3950
Santa Clara, CA 95051

Dear Mr. Lamond:

\JThe enclosed information describes
several potential markets for the National
16000: Artificial Intelligence applications, education, and LISP.

The cover letter to Kenyon Mei summarizes these areas (I talked with
Kenyon in early February)

I am actively involved in developing LISP systems for Navy
applications; initially they have chosen the 68000.
I am convinced that the 16000 is a better architecture for advanced
AI applications (Vax-like instructions and the MOD register are
particularly attractive).
Unless there is something disasterous in the
implementation, the 16000 would make an exceptionally fine LISP host.

I am convinced that either National or Fairchild should pursue AI applications
of the 16000, particularly in light of
the Fairchild-Schlumberger connection. Peter Hart of the Fairchild AI
group has expressed possible future interest, but understandably is driven
by short-term goals of establishing AI tools on existing systems.
I, on the other hand, wish to anticipate the future; the machine
looks good, the applications are rich, and so I wish to be in a position
to utilize that machine at the earliest possible time.
Considering the constraints within Fairchild, it appears that the
initiative must come from National. I hope the attacted documents
will initiate that action.

Besides running the The LISP Company, I also teach at Santa
Clara University.
As I said in my letter to Kenyon, I would consider writing a
computer science text utilizing the National architecture.
I am willing to play a waiting game, trading my exposure in the field
for future returns.

So, if these ideas sound attractive, please read the supporting
material.
I'm including several phone numbers since
my activities require that I be in several places at once.
I look forward to hearing from you.
